IEC 61850 Communication and Ethernet Interface
The CI868A provides an Ethernet communication path between an AC 800M controller and IEC 61850 external devices. It implements IEC 61850 Edition 2 functions for substation automation data exchange.
The module supports MMS as a client and GOOSE as both publisher and subscriber. Therefore, the controller can exchange IEC 61850 process and control data without requiring a separate controller for the electrical control interface.
The TP868 Baseplate provides two RJ-45 Ethernet connectors. CH1 supports 10 Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s operation. The Ethernet connection must pass through an Ethernet switch before connecting to the main network.
The baseplate uses a mechanical code lock to prevent installation of an incompatible unit type. This coding mechanism restricts incorrect module installation on the corresponding baseplate.
CEX-Bus and Power Architecture
The CI868A expansion unit contains the CEX-Bus logic, communication electronics, and a DC/DC converter. The converter derives the required internal voltages from the +24 V supply through the CEX-Bus.
The CEX-Bus supports up to 12 units. Typical 24 V consumption is 160 mA, while the specified power dissipation is 3.8 W.
ABB specifies hot-swap capability for the module. However, network configuration, controller state, and system maintenance procedures should be considered before removing or installing the unit in an operating system.
The CI868A does not provide network redundancy or module redundancy according to the supplied technical data.
System Compatibility
The CI868A is specified for System 800xA version 6.0.3.3, version 6.1.1, and subsequent versions. System software compatibility should therefore be verified before deployment or replacement.
The module can also be used together with an HI Controller where the corresponding System 800xA configuration supports the hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What IEC 61850 communication functions does the CI868A provide? A: The CI868A supports MMS client communication and GOOSE publishing and subscription under IEC 61850 Edition 2.
Q: What Ethernet speed does the CI868A support? A: The TP868 Baseplate CH1 Ethernet interface supports 10 Mbit/s and 100 Mbit/s operation through an RJ-45 connection.
Q: Does the CI868A support network or module redundancy? A: The supplied specifications state that both network redundancy and module redundancy are not supported.
Field Installation Guidelines
Install the CI868A only on the compatible TP868 Baseplate and verify the mechanical code before insertion.
Connect the Ethernet cable through an appropriate Ethernet switch before connecting to the main network.
Use the designated CH1 RJ-45 connector for the specified Ethernet communication path.
Maintain physical separation between Ethernet communication cables and high-voltage or high-current conductors where practical.
Route communication cables to minimize exposure to electromagnetic interference from switching equipment and power circuits.
Verify the +24 V supply and CEX-Bus installation before commissioning the communication interface.
Confirm that the installed System 800xA version is 6.0.3.3, 6.1.1, or a subsequent supported version.
Check IEC 61850 device configuration, MMS client parameters, and GOOSE publisher/subscriber assignments before placing the controller into service.
Observe the specified 0 to +55 deg C operating temperature range and 5 to 95 % non-condensing relative humidity range.
Provide an enclosure or installation environment that maintains the specified IP20 protection and pollution conditions.
Follow the applicable IEC/EN, UL, hazardous-location, and site-specific electrical installation requirements during commissioning.
