Description
ABB CI856K01 S100 I/O Communication Interface
Configured for S100 I/O communication in AC 800M systems, the ABB CI856K01 (CI856 S100 I/O Communication Interface) provides the communication path between the AC 800M controller and S100 I/O racks. The CI856 connects to the CEX-Bus through the TP856 baseplate and requires no separate external power source.

CEX-Bus and S100 I/O Communication
The CI856 exchanges S100 I/O data with the AC 800M controller through the CEX-Bus interface. The TP856 baseplate provides the mechanical mounting interface and houses the ribbon connector used for connection to S100 I/O rack bus extender boards.
One CI856 can connect to up to five S100 I/O racks. Each rack can accommodate up to 20 I/O boards. Therefore, the supported architecture permits distributed S100 I/O expansion while retaining the controller-side CEX-Bus connection.
The module receives its operating power from the AC 800M processor unit through the CEX-Bus. Consequently, the CI856 does not require a separate external power supply.
The specified 36-pin Miniribbon connector provides the physical interface for the communication assembly. The TP856 baseplate also supports DIN-rail mounting for installation within the control cabinet.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: How many S100 I/O racks can one CI856K01 support? A: One CI856K01 can connect to up to five S100 I/O racks, with each rack supporting up to 20 I/O boards.
Q: Does the CI856K01 require an external power supply? A: No. The CI856 receives power from the AC 800M processor unit through the CEX-Bus. Its typical 24 VDC consumption is 120 mA.
Q: What connector does the CI856K01 use for the CEX-Bus connection? A: The supplied specification identifies a 36-pin Miniribbon connector. The connector is housed through the TP856 baseplate assembly.
Field Installation Guidelines
Mount the TP856 baseplate on a suitable DIN rail inside the control cabinet.
Install the CI856 communication interface on the TP856 baseplate according to the AC 800M hardware installation procedure.
Connect the baseplate to the CEX-Bus using the specified system connection arrangement.
Connect the TP856 ribbon interface to the S100 I/O rack bus extender boards.
Route communication and power-related wiring separately from high-current switching and high-noise circuits where practical.
Verify connector seating and mechanical retention before energizing the controller assembly.
Maintain cabinet grounding and shielding practices specified by the AC 800M and S100 I/O installation documentation.
Confirm that the installed rack count and I/O board count remain within the CI856 architecture limits.
Check the cabinet operating temperature against the specified 0 to +55 deg C range.
Inspect the installation for correct IP20 enclosure protection and adequate environmental control.
