Zinkteknik, a Swedish automotive tier-2 zinc die-casting manufacturer, is deploying Rockwell Automation’s Plex Smart Manufacturing Platform at its new Mexico facility. The cloud-based solution integrates MES, QMS, EDI, and analytics to enable real-time visibility, embedded quality control, and standardized global operations. This greenfield implementation supports faster ramp-up, improved traceability, and a scalable digital foundation for future multi-site expansion.

Rockwell Automation partners with Zinkteknik to deploy the Plex Smart Manufacturing Platform at a new greenfield facility in Mexico, enabling MES, QMS, EDI, and analytics for real-time visibility, quality control, and scalable digital manufacturing transformation across global operations.

Digital Foundation for a New Greenfield Smart Factory

Rockwell Automation has announced that Zinkteknik, a Sweden-based tier 2 zinc die-casting supplier for the automotive industry, will implement the Plex Smart Manufacturing Platform in its new Monterrey, Mexico facility. This move represents more than a software adoption—it is a deliberate step toward building a fully digitalized manufacturing foundation from day one.

From an industrial automation perspective, starting a greenfield project with a cloud-native MES environment removes years of legacy integration challenges. It allows engineering teams to design processes around data flow and traceability rather than retrofitting digital systems onto outdated infrastructure.

Unified MES, QMS, EDI, and Analytics in One Platform

The Plex deployment includes Manufacturing Execution System (MES), Quality Management System (QMS), Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), and Analytics & Operations (A&O). Together, these modules form a unified digital backbone connecting production, quality, and supply chain communication.

What stands out here is the shift from fragmented industrial software stacks toward an integrated operational model. In traditional automotive supply chains, MES and QMS often operate in silos, leading to delays in corrective actions. A unified platform reduces latency between production events and quality feedback loops, which is critical in high-precision die-casting environments.

Real-Time Visibility Driving Operational Intelligence

With Plex MES, Zinkteknik will gain real-time visibility into work-in-progress, material flow, and machine-level performance. This is particularly valuable in high-volume zinc die-casting, where process stability and cycle consistency directly impact defect rates.

From my experience in automation environments, real-time production visibility is no longer a “nice-to-have”—it is a baseline requirement. The real advantage emerges when this data is contextualized into actionable intelligence, enabling operators and engineers to respond before deviations become scrap or downtime.

Quality Embedded Directly into Production Workflows

The integration of Plex QMS into production workflows enables quality checks to occur at the point of execution rather than post-process inspection. This supports automotive-grade compliance requirements while enabling closed-loop corrective actions.

In practice, this approach shifts quality from a reactive function to a built-in control mechanism. For die-casting operations, where defects can originate from subtle process variations (temperature, pressure, or mold conditions), embedding quality logic directly into MES workflows significantly reduces systemic risk.

Scalability Through Cloud-Native Architecture

One of the most strategic aspects of the Plex platform is its cloud-native, single-instance architecture. Zinkteknik can standardize processes across its Sweden, Bosnia, and Mexico sites while still accommodating local operational differences.

This is particularly important for manufacturers expanding globally. Instead of replicating disparate plant systems, the organization builds a unified digital model that scales horizontally. In my view, this is where many manufacturers still struggle—global expansion often introduces digital fragmentation rather than alignment.

Engineering Perspective: Beyond Digitalization Toward Synchronization

What makes this deployment notable is not just digital transformation, but operational synchronization. When MES, QMS, EDI, and analytics operate on a shared data foundation, the plant begins to behave as a single responsive system rather than isolated functional departments.

However, technology alone is not enough. The real success factor lies in disciplined process engineering and change management on the shop floor. Without operator engagement and well-defined standard work, even the most advanced platforms risk becoming underutilized data repositories.

In my assessment, Zinkteknik’s approach reflects a mature understanding of Industry 4.0 principles: start with a digital-first greenfield design, enforce standardization early, and scale through data consistency rather than organizational complexity.
